Plain facts about Organic and Fiberglass Shingles
Both types of shingles, when applied properly, will perform well. To help you compare, Toiture Future has included some helpful information below.

 

Manufacturing:
Asphalt Roofing Products are manufactured in a continuous process using organic felt or fibreglass mat as the core materials on which other components are layered. The organic felt is saturated and coated with hot asphalt and the top surface is then covered with a protective layer of coloured, U.V. resistant ceramic granules. The fibreglass mat is coated with hot asphalt and the top surface is then covered with a protective layer of coloured U.V. resistant ceramic granules.

 

Organic Shingles:

• Have many decades of proven performance.
• Organic shingles are softer and easier to work with than fibreglass shingles, especially in cold weather applications.
• Contain more asphalt and nearly always use heavier weight reinforcement than fibreglass shingles of similar weight.
• Absorb roof stresses better and are more tear-resistant than fibreglass shingles.
• Are typically thicker than fibreglass shingles and more effectively hide minor imperfections in the roof deck or the old layer of shingles.

 

Fibreglass Shingles:

• Are more resistant to heat, which may cause blisters to form on softer organic shingles.
• On most applications, fibreglass shingles require the installation of an asphalt- saturated felt underlayment.
• Are more resistant to curling, which can happen with organic shingles after many years of service.
• Roof assemblies covered with fibreglass shingles have a higher fire resistance rating than roof assemblies covered with organic shingles.

Manufacturers now increasingly recommend fibreglass shingles to prevent the formation of algae (black spots).
